How to Know if Your Dream Is From God or Just Your Mind

Have you ever woken up from a dream and just laydown on your bed thinking, “God, is this You talking to me or is my mind just playing tricks?” It happens to a lot of us. I remember one time my friend Tolu called me early in the morning, almost in tears. She said, “I’ve been having this same dream for days, and I don’t know if it’s God warning me or am i just imagining what as been on my sub-conscious mind.” Immediately she said that, I could relate because I’ve been there too.

The truth is, not every dream you have at night comes straight from heaven. Sometimes it’s just your brain unloading the wahala of the day, work stress, late-night gist, too much suya before bed. But then, there are those dreams that feel different. They stick to your spirit, they carry weight, and they almost always point you back to God.

One way I usually tell the difference is by how I feel when I wake up. A dream from God often leaves a certain kind of peace or conviction in your heart, even if the message itself is a warning. It doesn’t leave you stranded in confusion. On the other hand, when it’s just your mind running wild, you wake up restless or even laughing at how random it was.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that when a dream is from God it will never contradict His Word. He won’t give you a dream that encourages sin or pushes you away from Him. Instead, He will use the dream as a way to draw you closer, to remind you to pray, to forgive, to let go, and to prepare yourself for the great journey that is ahead of you. Sometimes He reveals the same dream to you until you finally pay attention. That’s His way of saying, “My child, I need you to notice this.”

But at the end of the day, the safest way to know is to take it back to God in prayer. Don’t rush to Google dream meanings. Sit with the Holy Spirit and ask, “Lord, what are You trying to say to me?” Many times, He’ll confirm it through scripture or even through the words of someone you trust.

So the next time you wake up wondering if that dream was divine or just mental gist, don’t panic. Slow down, pray, and let God make it clear. He still speaks through dreams, just as He did with Joseph, Daniel, and so many others. And if it’s truly from Him, He’ll give you the wisdom to understand it.
